Faces in the Sand edition by Richard MacLeod Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

On a fall day in 1950, five-year-old Portia Welby watched her father disappear into the crowd during a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. All she remembers growing up are the roughness of his hands and the color of his eyes. The rest is locked away by a mother who lived with the shades pulled down. He was a spy, a movie star, maybe even a prince, but she is plagued by endless, unanswered questions. Who was he and why did he abandon her? Twenty-five years later, she receives a mysterious call from an unknown grandmother who tells her he is dying and needs to see her. She finds herself in an old house and given three large trunks which contain letters written by her father when he was a soldier during World War II. The letters put her on a journey through his life as he struggles with the weight of history, the loss of innocence, and the hope of forgiveness. Along the way, she discovers herself and the family she never knew.

I enjoyed the mystery element in this book and it was fun to help the protagonist piece together the clues to her father's past. Much of this book was like reading through diaries from World War II, and as a historian and a fan of historical fiction, I liked the letters that put the reader into the action. If the rest of the book had maintained the same pace, this would have been a five-star review, but the first part of the book needed to be tightened and reorganized a bit so that more was revealed to the reader through action, rather than being told to the reader. Even though the main character was a psychologist, it would have been more enjoyable to learn about her character flaws and her problems with trust and relationships through dialogue with others, rather than through her self-analysis. Still, the historical elements kept me reading and the end has an interesting twist.Product details

Faces in the Sand edition by Richard MacLeod Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I loved this book!!! It captivated me from start to finish...The story is filled with rich memorable characters that you laugh and cry with...I couldn't put this book down and read it in one day..Mr. MacLeod deals with a subject not often talked about in a compelling story with such an unpredictable ending you will never see it coming.. a must read!!!
This book was so intriguing and a wonderful read. It was a quick read, I couldn't put it down until I found out why the father would leave his daughter and not search for her. The characters that were brought into the book were all very different from the father's history, yet but all were tied together in his life in the service. The true history in the book was fascinating and was well written. I definitely recommend this book to anyone.
This book takes you on a journey from beginning to end. Portia, the main character, makes you feel her pain as well as her joy along the way. The mystery of her father suddenly disappearing that one fall day, leaves you guessing why. As she reads each letter her father wrote home to his mother during the war, you learn little by little why her father did what he did. Although all she remembers was the feel of his hands and the color of his eyes, the letters give her a better picture of who her father really was and what he goes through during his life. You will begin to understand his struggles he dealt with and why. Her whole life she imagined who he was, and now it become reality. It definitely keeps you wanting to read the next page and the next page to see what will ultimately happen. I highly recommend this book. It was a wonderful book to read - a fabulous book for any book club!
Faces in the Sand is an superb book. Although the pace is somewhat slow and the story seems to emerge in frustrating dribbles, it grabs your attention and your heart. You cant put it down. At the age of 5, Portia is abandoned by her father who leaves her in the stands of a Yankee's game when he goes off to get drunk. She doesn't see him again until she is 30 and he is on his death bed. The loss of her father is devastating and Portia's life is difficult and hollow because of this abandonment. It seems inconceivable that a father would do such a thing, and the reader is as hungry as Portia is for an explanation. The ending is beautiful, bringing everything together, healing her heart, and giving the reader a warm embrace.
The book probes the depths of the human psyche bringing out the importance of friendship and especially love in making it through our lives. We make mistakes, but we are usually forgiven by loyal friends and family. The book also explores in detail the horrendous damage that war can inflict on soldiers, including the ravages of post traumatic stress disorder. Everyone that reads this gem will surely come out of the experience a better and wiser person.
